Mini split faults we troubleshoot
- Error codes read from the indoor display, blinking lights or the outdoor board
- Remote and sensor issues: weak batteries, room sensor drift and receiver faults
- Drain leaks from blocked condensate lines, a tilted head or a full pan
- Frozen indoor coils from low airflow, dirty filters or refrigerant problems
- Noisy fans caused by worn bearings, debris on the blower wheel or loose mounts
- Communication faults between the indoor and outdoor units
- Refrigerant symptoms, with leak testing before any refrigerant is added
- Outdoor fan, control board and compressor operation
Process
A repair visit, in order
Every job starts with a conversation and a look at the equipment. You see the options in plain language before anything is booked.
- 1
Listen and look
We ask when the problem started, what the display shows and whether it affects one head or all of them. We also check the remote, the mode and the filters.
- 2
Read the codes and test the basics
We read any error codes against the manufacturer documentation, then check power, the breaker, the disconnect and the communication wiring between units.
- 3
Open it up where needed
If the cause is not obvious, we remove the cover to inspect the board, sensors, blower wheel, coil and drain tray. Many faults only show once the head is open.
- 4
Options, repair and verification
You hear the cause, the repair options and whether the repair makes sense for the age of the unit. After the work we run both heating and cooling to confirm it is behaving properly.

Reading the symptoms
Error codes are clues, not verdicts
Codes differ by manufacturer and model. They can point to a sensor, a communication fault, a power issue or a refrigerant-side problem, so we confirm with measurements before replacing parts.
Water on the wall or floor
A blocked drain, a head that is out of level or a frozen coil thawing can all cause drips. We clean and test the drain path, check the head level and find out why the coil iced up.
Cooling works but heating does not, or the reverse
This can come from mode settings, sensors, outdoor conditions or a reversing valve problem. We rule out the simple causes first.
When a head is not worth repairing
Older heads with discontinued boards, a leaking coil or a compressor fault on an out-of-warranty system can cost more to fix than they are worth. We explain your options, including ductless mini split installation for a replacement.
Before you call
Try a fresh set of remote batteries, a different mode, the breaker and a clean filter. If you see water near electrical parts or smell burning, switch the system off at the breaker. A diagnostic fee may apply; confirmed at booking. Emergency service is subject to availability. Regular filter cleaning prevents several of these faults; see ductless maintenance.
Ontario notes
Ductless repair in Ontario: winter and humidity faults
Frost and snow around the outdoor unit
Winter operation causes frost on the outdoor coil, which melts during defrost. Heavy snow, drifting and ice can block airflow and drainage. Keep the area clear and the unit raised. If ice keeps building after you clear it, a fault in defrost, sensors or drainage is likely.
Humid summers and drain problems
In humid summers, an indoor head produces plenty of condensate. A blocked drain or a head that is out of level can drip onto walls and floors. We clear and test the drain path, check the level and find out why it backed up.
Shared walls and condo installations
In condos and townhouses, repairs may involve shared walls, balconies or outdoor equipment rules. Tell your property manager or condo board about the visit if access is needed. Property managers can see property management HVAC.
Older systems and parts
Older mini splits can run into discontinued boards and parts that are hard to find. When a repair costs close to the value of the unit, replacement can make more sense. We explain both paths. See ductless mini split installation.

Questions about Ductless Repair
What does the error code on my mini split mean?
Codes vary by brand and model, and the same code can have more than one cause. Take a photo of the display or note the blinking pattern and tell us the model. We use the manufacturer documentation and test to confirm.
Why is my mini split leaking water inside?
The usual causes are a blocked condensate drain, a head that has shifted out of level, or a frozen coil melting. Turn the unit off and place a towel or tray under it. We find the cause and clear the drain path.
Can you repair a ductless system you did not install?
Generally yes, depending on the make, model and parts availability. We work with many leading brands. Share the model number when you book.
The outdoor unit runs but the head does not blow. Why?
It could be a fan motor, a board, a sensor or a communication fault. If the head is blowing but not cooling or heating, the issue may be on the refrigerant side. Diagnosis tells us which.
Is there a diagnostic fee?
A diagnostic fee may apply; confirmed at booking. It covers the technician time needed to find the cause. If you ask us to proceed with a repair, we explain the cost first.
Why is my mini split blinking and not cooling or heating?
Blinking lights can show an error code or a normal state such as warm-up, defrost or a filter reminder. The pattern differs by brand. Check the manual or note the pattern, then try a power reset at the breaker. If it keeps blinking, tell us the model and the pattern when you call.
Why does my mini split smell like burning?
A light dusty smell the first time it runs in heating mode after months off is common. An electrical, hot plastic or strong burning smell is not. Switch the unit off at the breaker and call us. Do not run it until a technician has looked.
Why is my mini split not heating in winter?
Causes include defrost mode, low outdoor temperatures, mode or sensor settings, an iced outdoor unit or a refrigerant leak. Check that it is in heat mode and the setpoint is above room temperature. If the outdoor unit is buried in snow, clear it carefully. If it still does not heat, call us.
Why does my ductless unit turn on and off by itself?
Possible causes include sensor drift, a dirty filter, blocked airflow, remote timer or eco settings, communication faults between the indoor and outdoor units, and power problems. We check settings first, then electrical and sensor readings. Note the pattern and when it started.
Why is my outdoor mini split unit covered in ice?
Light frost that melts during defrost is normal. Thick ice that keeps building, or ice that stays after defrost, is not. Clear snow around the unit and do not chip at the coil. The cause could be a defrost, sensor, airflow or drainage fault, and we test to find it.
The remote works but the unit does not respond. What should I check?
Replace the remote batteries, check that the mode and any lock or timer are not set, and make sure the receiver is not blocked. Then check the breaker and disconnect. If the display still does not respond, the cause could be a board or sensor fault. Tell us the model when you call.
Can one head be replaced without replacing the whole multi-zone system?
Sometimes. A new head has to be compatible with the existing outdoor unit and line set, and newer heads may not pair with older outdoor units. We check model numbers and capacity before recommending a replacement. Tell us the make and model when you book.
