HVAC in Toronto: what to expect
Toronto's housing is older than most of the GTA. Think Victorian and Edwardian semis in The Annex and Cabbagetown, workers' cottages in Leslieville and Riverdale, brick bungalows in Leaside, and long rows of 1920s houses around High Park and Roncesvalles. Many were first heated by gravity-fed hot water or a coal furnace and converted over the years. What you find today is often a patchwork: a newer furnace feeding original ducts that were never sized for it, a boiler still running radiators on one floor, and an addition with no heat at all.
That history shapes the work. Lots are narrow, so sidewall vent and intake clearances have to be checked on site. Basements are low or have been lowered, and mechanical rooms are small. Summers in the core run warm and humid, while streets near the lake in The Beaches stay cooler well into spring. Kelvin Mechanical serves homeowners, landlords and small businesses across the city, and we start with a site review so the plan fits your building and not a catalogue picture.

What Toronto homes usually need
Old brick, narrow lots, short vent runs
A high-efficiency furnace vents through a side wall, and gas code clearances to windows, meters and a neighbour's lot line can be hard to meet between semis. We map the vent and air intake route first, then size the equipment with a proper load calculation. If the old chimney still serves a water heater, it may need relining or a different venting setup. See furnace installation for how a replacement is planned.
Radiators, boilers and rooms the ducts missed
Plenty of Toronto houses still heat with a boiler and radiators, and they work well when the system is balanced and looked after. For a third-floor room, a rear addition or a converted attic with no duct path, a ductless mini split can add heating and cooling without opening up the walls. Our boiler and hydronic heating page covers the radiator side.
Condos, shops and restaurant strips
Condo owners should know who owns what. In many towers the risers and central equipment belong to the building, and the condominium declaration decides who owns an in-suite fan coil, so we confirm scope with the board or manager before quoting anything. Along Queen West, the Danforth and St. Clair West, small shops and restaurants need rooftop or split systems and kitchen ventilation that suit older buildings. See restaurant HVAC.

Questions from Toronto customers
Can a heat pump work in an older Toronto house?
Often yes, but it depends on the building envelope, the existing ducts or radiators, and the electrical panel. A load calculation shows whether a ducted heat pump, ductless heads or a hybrid with your existing furnace fits. Eligible Ontario customers may qualify for up to $7,500 depending on the program rules, equipment, property and funding available at the time, so check rebate eligibility before you commit.
I own a condo unit. What can you actually work on?
It depends on the building. Shared systems, balconies and exterior walls need board or property-manager approval, and we do not touch building-owned equipment without it. For equipment inside your unit that you own, such as a water heater, we can review it and tell you what is realistic.
Do you cover all of Toronto?
Kelvin Mechanical serves the City of Toronto, including Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough, as well as the wider GTA. Call +1 905-407-7353 or use the booking form and we will confirm availability for your address. Emergency service is subject to availability.
Do you repair old boilers and furnaces in Toronto houses, or only replace them?
We diagnose the fault first, then explain whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense. Many older Toronto houses still heat with a boiler and radiators or an aging furnace in a small mechanical room, and both can often be repaired when parts are available. A diagnostic fee may apply; confirmed at booking. Emergency service is subject to availability. See boiler repair and hydronic heating and furnace repair.
