Scope

What a Kelvin air conditioner install covers

  • Cooling load considerations: insulation, windows, orientation and air leakage, not floor area alone
  • Evaporator coil matching so the indoor and outdoor sections work as a rated pair
  • Line set condition check: reused only if clean, sound and the right size for the new system
  • Condensate drain setup with a trap, cleanout access and a safe discharge point
  • Thermostat setup, with compatible wiring and staging for the equipment installed
  • Ductwork condition review: leaks, undersized runs, return air and register balance
  • Start-up testing of airflow, electrical readings, temperature split and charge indicators
  • After-install support: a walkthrough and a point of contact for questions

Process

From first visit to a cooler house

Every job starts with a conversation and a look at the equipment. You see the options in plain language before anything is booked.

Request an AC installation quote

  1. 1

    Site review and cooling load

A technician looks at insulation, windows, sun exposure, ductwork and the equipment already in place. Sizing comes from a proper load calculation, because oversized equipment can cycle too often.

  2. 2

    Coil and line set decisions

We match the outdoor unit to a compatible evaporator coil and blower. Then we check whether the existing line set is clean, correctly sized and free of kinks before deciding to reuse it or replace it.

  3. 3

    Installation, drain and wiring

The pad, refrigerant connections, condensate drain, disconnect and control wiring are completed to the manufacturer's instructions. Electrical work is done by licensed electrical professionals or trade partners, with permits and ESA notification where required.

  4. 4

    Start-up testing

We pressure test and evacuate the lines, then measure airflow, electrical draw and temperature split against the manufacturer data. The thermostat is set up and the system is run through a full cooling cycle.

  5. 5

    Handover and support

You get a walkthrough of the thermostat, filter access and what to watch in the first season. Manufacturer warranty terms apply, we explain them, and you know who to call if something looks off.

Good to know

Where an AC install gets complicated

Adding AC to an existing furnace

Your furnace blower moves the cooled air, so the coil and the blower have to suit each other. The furnace airflow rating limits how large an AC can sensibly go. We check this before quoting.

Small offices, shops and suites

Light commercial spaces often use a split system or a packaged unit. Loads depend on equipment heat, occupancy and glass, so the review covers those. For larger roof-mounted jobs, see packaged units.

Cooling and heating from one system

A heat pump cools like an AC and also heats. If your furnace is near the end of its life, comparing both can be worthwhile. Our heat pump selection guide lays out the trade-offs.

Pricing and timing, stated plainly

Pricing varies with equipment, ductwork, electrical needs, installation complexity and warranty options; a quote follows a site review. Timing depends on equipment availability, site conditions, permits and project scope. Start with Build My Quote, and ask about financing options, which are subject to provider approval, terms and expiry.

Customer reviews

What customers say

Kelvin Mechanical installed our Midea air conditioner and GE water heater, and we are very happy with the overall service. The pricing was a great value compared to the quality of work provided. The workmanship was very good, clean, and professional. Everything was completed properly, and both the AC and water heater are working great. I would definitely recommend Kelvin Mechanical for HVAC and water heater installation.

Questions about AC Installation

How do you decide what size air conditioner my house needs?

We use a cooling load calculation that accounts for insulation, windows, orientation, air leakage and ductwork. Square footage alone is not a reliable guide.

Can you reuse my existing line set and coil?

Sometimes. The line set has to be clean, correctly sized and undamaged, and the coil has to be compatible with the new outdoor unit. If either one is questionable, we recommend replacing it.

Do you install air conditioning in small commercial spaces?

Yes, for light commercial spaces such as small offices and retail units, depending on the scope. We review the load, the ductwork and the electrical supply first.

What if my ductwork is in poor shape?

We note leaks, restrictions and return air problems during the site review and explain how each could affect comfort. You can have them fixed with the install or later, and nothing is added without your approval.

Is the work done by licensed professionals?

Kelvin Mechanical works with licensed and qualified professionals and trade partners, depending on the project scope. Electrical and refrigerant work are handled by the appropriate qualified people. Permits and ESA notification are arranged where required.

How long does a central air conditioner last in Ontario?

A central air conditioner is often expected to last somewhere in the range of 12 to 15 years, though installation quality, maintenance, run time and dirt all play a part. Because Ontario has a short, intense cooling season, the unit sits idle for much of the year. Age matters, but repair history and refrigerant type matter too.

Do I need a permit to install central air in Ontario?

It depends on the municipality and the work. Some cities require an HVAC or building permit for a new air conditioner, and electrical work may need its own permit. Rules differ by municipality and change, so we confirm what applies before work starts, and permits and inspections are arranged where required.

Can I add central air to a house with no ductwork?

Often yes, through a ductless system or, in some homes, new ductwork. Bungalows, two-storey homes and houses with hot water radiators each have different options, and the right one depends on access, ceiling space and budget. A site review shows what is practical. See ductless mini split installation for homes without ducts.

Is a heat pump better than central air for an Ontario house?

A heat pump cools like an air conditioner and also heats. If you are replacing both your furnace and air conditioner, it may suit. If your furnace is fine and you only need cooling, central air may be simpler. Rebate programs may apply to heat pumps depending on the rules at the time. See heat pump installation.

Where can the outdoor air conditioner unit go, and are there noise or setback rules?

The unit needs clear airflow and service access, and it should avoid spots under windows, decks or roofs that shed snow. Many municipalities have bylaws on placement, setbacks from property lines and noise. Rules differ by municipality, so we check before the unit is set.

Should I replace my furnace when I replace my air conditioner?

Not always. If the furnace is in good shape and its blower and airflow suit the new coil, the two can be matched. If the furnace is near the end of its life, replacing both avoids a second project later. We explain the options after the site review. See furnace installation.

What refrigerant will a new air conditioner use?

New equipment is moving from R-410A to lower-global-warming refrigerants such as R-32 and R-454B, and the type depends on the equipment you choose. Ask which one is used, what that means for future servicing and how parts are supplied. R-22 has been phased out, so refrigerant supply for older R-22 systems is limited.

When is the right time to install air conditioning in Ontario?

Spring, before the first heat wave, gives you the most flexibility. Equipment availability and scheduling tighten when hot weather arrives. A fall or winter install is also possible, and it can be useful if your old unit failed late in the season. Start with Build My Quote.

What does the SEER2 rating on an air conditioner mean?

SEER2 is a seasonal efficiency rating for air conditioners and heat pumps. A higher number means less electricity used for the same cooling under test conditions. It is one factor alongside correct sizing, installation quality and ductwork. Compare models of similar capacity, and ask which rating applies to the equipment being quoted.
