Scope

Three humidifier types and what each needs

  • Bypass humidifier: uses the pressure difference between the supply and return plenums, needs a bypass duct and runs with the blower
  • Fan-powered humidifier: its own fan moves air through the pad, so no bypass duct is needed
  • Steam humidifier: makes steam independently of furnace air temperature, needs a suitable electrical supply
  • Water connection: a dedicated line with a shutoff, from a suitable cold-water supply
  • Drain connection to a floor drain, condensate pump or approved drain path
  • Humidistat or control, wall- or duct-mounted, with outdoor-temperature compensation if the model offers it
  • Furnace or air handler compatibility, blower operation and wiring checks
  • Summer shut-down steps: water off and damper set according to the model

Process

How a humidifier goes in, start to finish

Every job starts with a conversation and a look at the equipment. You see the options in plain language before anything is booked.

  1. 1

    Check the heating system

We look at the furnace or air handler type, space on the plenum, blower operation and where water and drain lines can run. A heat pump or low-temperature system may suit a steam or fan-powered model better than a bypass type.

  2. 2

    Choose the type

Bypass is simple and common. Fan-powered works where a bypass duct is awkward. Steam handles different supply air temperatures but needs an electrical supply and more upkeep. We explain the trade-offs and the care each type needs.

  3. 3

    Mount and connect

We cut in and mount the unit, then run the water line with a shutoff and the drain line with a proper slope. Wiring to the furnace and humidistat follows the furnace and humidifier manufacturer instructions.

  4. 4

    Set the humidistat

We set a winter starting point and show you how to lower it as outdoor temperatures drop. Too much indoor humidity in a cold spell can cause condensation on windows.

  5. 5

    Test and walk through

We check for water leaks, drain flow, humidifier operation with the blower and the control response. You get the pad replacement timing and a seasonal start-up and shut-down note.

Good to know

Setting humidity for an Ontario winter

Condensation on windows

Warm, humid indoor air meets cold glass and fogs it. If windows show water, the setting is too high for the outdoor temperature. Lower it and watch. Older windows and cold corners show it first.

A sensible winter range

Many households settle between about 30 and 40 per cent relative humidity and reduce it during extended cold. Comfort, window type and how airtight the house is all play a part, so start low and adjust.

Annual pad maintenance

The water panel (pad) collects minerals as water evaporates. Replace it before each heating season, and more often in hard-water homes. A clogged pad humidifies less and can smell musty. See air purifier service for pad replacement.

Furnace and humidifier together

A humidifier depends on the furnace or air handler running. Annual furnace maintenance is a good time to check the humidifier, drain and water line.

Humidity needs watching

A humidifier raises humidity in a controlled way, but air leakage and weather play a part, and too much humidity causes problems of its own. We set it conservatively and show you how to adjust. Questions about Humidifier Installation

Which type of humidifier do I need?

It depends on your heating system, house size and how much upkeep you want. Bypass is common on forced-air furnaces, fan-powered works where a bypass duct is awkward, and steam suits different conditions. We recommend after seeing the system.

What humidity level should I set in winter?

Many people start at about 30 to 35 per cent and lower the setting as outdoor temperatures fall. If windows fog or show condensation, reduce it. A separate hygrometer helps you check the real reading.

How often should the pad be replaced?

Once a year, before the heating season, is a common starting point. Hard water can mean more often. Follow the manufacturer instructions for your model.

Can a humidifier go on a heat pump air handler?

Often yes, but the type matters because supply air from a heat pump is cooler. Steam or fan-powered models can suit better. We check compatibility before recommending.

Do I need a drain?

Many bypass and fan-powered models drain excess water, so they need a drain path such as a floor drain or condensate pump. Some steam models drain differently. We confirm the requirement for your model.

Why is my house still dry with a humidifier?

Common reasons include a setting that is too low, a clogged pad, a water supply left off, a bypass damper closed or a house that leaks a lot of air. Cold snaps also pull humidity down fast. Check the pad and water supply first, then ask us to look at the control and airflow. See air purifier service.

Can a whole-home humidifier cause mould in my house?

Only if humidity is set too high for the weather or water is left standing. Fogging on windows is the early warning that the setting should come down. A correctly set unit with a clean pad and a working drain is far less likely to cause trouble.

Is it normal for windows to fog after installing a humidifier?

It is a sign that indoor humidity is too high for the outdoor temperature. Lower the humidistat setting and watch the windows over a day or two. Older windows and cold corners show it first. We set a conservative starting point and show you how to adjust it.

Should I turn off my humidifier in summer?

Yes. Shut off the water supply and set the damper or control to the summer position described in the manual. Air conditioning removes moisture, so a running humidifier in summer works against it. Replace the pad before the next heating season.

Can a humidifier damage my furnace?

A correctly installed and maintained humidifier should not. Problems come from leaks, scale build-up from hard water, a blocked drain or incorrect wiring. We follow the furnace and humidifier instructions for installation and check the drain and water line each time we service the unit.

Should I use a whole-home humidifier or a portable one?

A portable unit treats one room and needs refilling. A whole-home unit connects to your water supply and your heating system and humidifies the house through the ductwork. We install whole-home units. Which suits you depends on the house layout and how much upkeep you want.

Will a humidifier help with static shocks and dry wood?

Dry winter air is a common cause of static shocks, shrinking wood and dry-feeling air. A controlled humidifier can raise indoor humidity and reduce those effects. We make no health claims, and we set it conservatively so windows do not fog.
