Scope

Problems we triage on urgent calls

  • Furnace not heating, short cycling or locking out
  • Heat pump not heating, iced over or stuck in defrost
  • Air conditioner not cooling, frozen coil or tripped condensate switch
  • Thermostat blank, in the wrong mode or not calling for heat or cooling
  • Blower not running, weak airflow or a breaker that keeps tripping
  • Boiler or hydronic system with no heat reaching radiators or floors (see boiler repair and hydronic heating)
  • Ignition, pressure switch, inducer and flame sensor faults
  • Equipment checks after the utility has cleared any gas or carbon monoxide concern

Process

What to do in the first few minutes

Every job starts with a conversation and a look at the equipment. You see the options in plain language before anything is booked.

Request urgent service

  1. 1

    Safety check first

If you smell gas, hear hissing or a CO alarm sounds, leave the home and call 911 and your gas utility from outside. Do not restart equipment. Everything else on this page can wait until the area is cleared.

  2. 2

    Run the safe checks

Confirm the thermostat is in the right mode with fresh batteries and a setpoint past room temperature, and that the breaker and furnace service switch are on. Check the filter, and make sure registers and the outdoor unit are not blocked by snow, leaves or debris. Do not open equipment panels.

  3. 3

    Call +1 905-407-7353

Tell us what the system is doing, any error codes or blinking lights, the equipment type and age, and what you already checked. We share the soonest option we can offer, with no promised response time.

  4. 4

    Technician diagnosis

On site, the technician checks safety and the sequence of operation, reads codes and tests components, then explains the fault and your options. A diagnostic fee may apply; confirmed at booking. Repair pricing is given before approved work.

  5. 5

    Repair, interim fix or plan

Where parts are on hand, the repair may be finished during the visit. Otherwise we explain what is needed, any safe interim steps and the plan for a follow-up. If replacement is the sensible path, start with Build My Quote.

Good to know

Staying safe and preparing while you wait for service

No heat in cold weather

Close doors to unused rooms and layer clothing and blankets. Never use a gas oven, barbecue or portable fuel-burning heater indoors. Open cabinet doors on exterior walls so room air can reach the plumbing.

No cooling in a heat wave

Close blinds on the sunny side, use fans, drink water and move to the coolest part of the home. If anyone is unwell from the heat, call 911. If an air conditioner coil has iced over, switch cooling off at the thermostat and let it thaw; running the fan alone can speed that up.

Carbon monoxide alarms

Working CO alarms matter any time fuel-burning equipment is in the home. Test them, and replace them by their expiry date. An alarm that sounds means leave first and call 911. A carbon monoxide alarm does not detect a natural gas leak, so a gas smell needs the same response even when no alarm sounds.

What helps us diagnose faster

Know your equipment brand and model, note any error code or flash pattern, and tell us when the problem began and what changed. A photo of the rating plate and the thermostat screen saves time.

What emergency service means here

Emergency service is subject to availability. We do not promise a response time, because weather and call volume vary. For businesses, see commercial emergency service. To avoid the next breakdown, look at furnace maintenance.

Customer reviews

What customers say

Kelvin Mechanical really helped me out when I was in an extreme bind. I called several other service providers who refused to come out on a Sunday, or who were charging exorbitant prices for doing so. Without hesitation, Kelvin Mechanical agreed to help me out, and their pricing was more than reasonable. I am grateful for their commitment to serve the community. They are extremely professional and knowledgeable but also operate with both honesty and integrity. I would happily recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable HVAC technician! Thanks again!

Questions about Emergency Heating / Cooling

What should I check before I call?

Thermostat mode, setpoint and batteries, the breaker and furnace switch, the filter, and any blocked vents or outdoor unit. If you smell gas or a CO alarm sounds, skip the checks and leave. Do not open the equipment.

Is emergency service always available?

Emergency service is subject to availability. Demand rises sharply in cold snaps and heat waves, so we cannot promise an arrival time. Calling early in a problem helps.

What will the technician diagnose?

Safety first, then the control sequence: thermostat call, safeties, ignition or compressor start, blower and airflow, and drain or condensate issues. They read fault codes, test parts and explain the cause before recommending work.

Is there a charge for an emergency visit?

A diagnostic fee may apply; confirmed at booking. Repairs are priced after diagnosis and before approved work. Any promotional offer is subject to its own terms and must be confirmed when you book.

When should I call +1 905-407-7353?

Call when the safe checks do not restore heat or cooling, when a system keeps shutting off, or when equipment shows an error code you cannot clear. Light commercial properties can also call, subject to availability.

What should I do if my furnace stops working in the middle of an Ontario winter?

Run the safe checks: thermostat mode and batteries, breaker, furnace switch, filter and outdoor vent pipes. Close doors to unused rooms and keep warm in one room. Never use a gas oven or barbecue for heat. Call +1 905-407-7353 and tell us what the furnace is doing. Emergency service is subject to availability.

Is it safe to stay in my house with no heat?

It depends on how cold it is outside, how long the outage lasts and who is at home. Infants, older adults and people with health conditions are at higher risk, so consider staying with family or friends. Pipes in exterior walls can be at risk in long cold spells. Do not use fuel-burning appliances for heat.

What should I do if my carbon monoxide alarm goes off?

Get everyone, including pets, outside into fresh air and call 911. Do not go back in until emergency responders and the gas utility say it is safe. Do not silence the alarm and carry on. Once the home is cleared, the equipment is checked before it is restarted.

Why do furnaces and heat pumps fail more often in a cold snap?

Equipment runs longer and harder in deep cold, which exposes weak parts such as igniters, capacitors and motors. Condensate lines and vent pipes can ice over, and heat pumps go through more defrost cycles. Yearly maintenance lowers the odds, though it cannot prevent every failure.

I am a tenant with no heat. Should I call you or my landlord?

Start with your landlord or property manager. Ontario landlords have responsibilities around providing heat, and many municipalities have heat bylaws. They usually control the equipment and the repair process. Property managers who need a repair partner can see property management HVAC.

My AC has ice on it or is leaking during a heat wave. Should I keep running it?

No. Switch cooling off at the thermostat. If your system has a fan setting, running the fan alone can help thaw the coil. Running with ice on the coil can damage the compressor and flood the drain pan. Place towels under any leak, switch off the breaker if water is near electrical parts, and call us.

My power came back after an outage but my heating will not restart. What should I check?

Check breakers, the furnace switch and the thermostat. Heat pump outdoor units may need a few minutes to restart. Ice or snow can block vent pipes and outdoor units after a storm. If the system still does not start, call +1 905-407-7353. Do not open equipment panels.

How do I stop pipes freezing if I have no heat?

Open the cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls, keep interior doors open so warmth moves through the home, and know where your main water shut-off is. Never use a gas oven, barbecue or portable fuel-burning heater indoors for warmth. Call for service, subject to availability, and if a pipe freezes or bursts, shut off the water at the main.
