Install checklist for gas tank, electric and hybrid units
- Site review of the existing heater, venting, gas or electrical supply and floor space
- Capacity selection from peak household demand, not headcount alone
- Venting matched to the unit: draft hood and chimney, liner or B-vent for atmospheric gas, blower and plastic vent pipe for power vent, none for electric or hybrid
- Combustion air confirmed for gas units, from room volume, openings or an outdoor air supply, as the code and instructions require
- Electrical supply confirmed: a 120 V outlet for power-vented units, a dedicated 240 V circuit for electric and hybrid tanks
- Gas, electrical and water connections made to code and manufacturer instructions
- Isolation valves, thermal expansion control and T&P valve discharge piping reviewed
- Drain pan or water shutoff discussion for finished or leak-sensitive spaces
- Hybrid units: airflow clearances, condensate drain routing and a dedicated circuit
- Start-up testing for leaks, ignition or element operation, temperature and safety devices
Process
From first visit to the day we hand it over
Every job starts with a conversation and a look at the equipment. You see the options in plain language before anything is booked.
- 1
Site review
We look at the current heater, the vent route, the gas line or electrical panel, the drain and the space around the unit. We also ask how your household uses hot water. Photos sent ahead help us arrive prepared.
- 2
Capacity and type selection
We match tank volume or flow rate to your peak demand, then check whether venting and space allow the type you prefer. If the numbers point elsewhere, we say so. The selection guide sets out the trade-offs.
- 3
Removal and installation
The old unit is drained and removed, and the new one is set level with the clearances the manufacturer requires. Connections follow code and manufacturer instructions, with permits and notifications where required.
- 4
Start-up testing
We fill the tank, purge air, check every joint for leaks and test ignition or element operation. Temperature, venting and safety devices are checked before the unit goes into service.
- 5
Customer walkthrough
We show you the shutoffs, the temperature setting, the relief valve discharge and what normal operation sounds like. You also get maintenance timing for your water, and we go over warranty registration.

Simultaneous hot water demand
How many hot-water fixtures run at the same time in a busy moment? This shows what that number means for sizing. It does not size a water heater.
Illustrative only. Real sizing uses the temperature rise from inlet to set point, the unit input in BTU/h or kW, flow rate at that rise for tankless, first-hour rating and recovery for tanks, and your actual simultaneous demand. We size on site, not from this slider.

Installation notes by water heater type
Atmospheric and power-vented gas tanks
Both are storage tanks; the difference is venting. An atmospheric (natural-draft) unit vents through a draft hood into a sound chimney, liner or B-vent, takes its combustion air from the room and needs no electrical outlet. A power-vented unit uses a blower and certified PVC or CPVC vent pipe, so it needs a 120 V outlet and a clear sidewall termination, and it still needs room combustion air. Gas line size, shutoff placement and combustion air are checked either way.
Electric tank
No flue and no combustion air, but the dedicated 240 V circuit, breaker and wiring must suit the unit nameplate. Electrical work is done by licensed electrical professionals or trade partners, with permits and ESA notification where required.
Hybrid and heat pump
These need floor space, room to breathe and a condensate drain, as well as a dedicated 240 V circuit. We review the location with you before ordering. Our electric and heat pump page has the detail.
Drain pan and shutoff
Where a leak would damage finished space, we discuss a drain pan piped to a suitable drain, and a leak sensor or automatic shutoff. These are options, not defaults, and depend on the location.
Plumbing scope
Our plumbing is limited to water heater connections and related support. Drains, sewers, plumbing vents, bathroom renovations and new-construction plumbing are outside our scope. See plumbing support for the full list.

Permits and notifications vary by municipality
Ontario sets general rules for gas, electrical and building work, but permits are handled locally and requirements change. A straightforward replacement may need little paperwork in one city and more in another. We confirm what applies to your address before work starts and include any permit or notification in your quote.
The gas side: meter, line and Enbridge Gas
Enbridge Gas is the main gas utility across the GTA, and it looks after the meter and service line. A different type of water heater can change the load on your house piping. We check the line size on the house side and tell you if the meter or supply needs a conversation with the utility.
Chimneys, liners and combined venting
Many Ontario homes built from the 1950s to the 1990s have masonry chimneys. When a furnace changes to a sealed-combustion type, the water heater may be left alone on a large flue. That can vent poorly. A liner or a power vent is the usual solution, and we assess the flue on site.
Basements, floor drains and flood risk
Most water heaters sit in basements, where a leak can reach finished flooring and stored items. A floor drain, a drain pan piped to a drain and a leak sensor or automatic shutoff are worth discussing. We recommend them where the location calls for it, not as a default.

What customers say
Kelvin Mechanical installed our Midea air conditioner and GE water heater, and we are very happy with the overall service. The pricing was a great value compared to the quality of work provided. The workmanship was very good, clean, and professional. Everything was completed properly, and both the AC and water heater are working great. I would definitely recommend Kelvin Mechanical for HVAC and water heater installation.

Questions about Water Heater Installation
Can you replace my water heater with a different type?
Often, yes, but a change affects venting, gas or electrical supply and space. We assess these before quoting. Moving from a chimney-vented tank to a power vent or electric unit is a common change.
Do I need a drain pan?
Not always. A pan is worth discussing where a leak would damage finished flooring or a room below. Code and the install location decide what is required, and we confirm both on site.
Will you handle permits?
Where permits or notifications are required for gas, electrical or other work, they form part of the job scope and are confirmed in your quote. Requirements vary by municipality and project.
How long does installation take?
A straightforward replacement is often done in a single visit, but timing depends on equipment availability, site conditions, venting changes and permits. We confirm the schedule when we quote.
What warranty applies?
Manufacturer warranty terms vary by model and depend on correct installation and registration. Labour warranty and extended warranty options are separate and vary by package. Ask about the unit you choose.
How much room do I need around a new water heater?
Each model lists minimum clearances for service access, combustion air and venting, and codes add their own. A tight closet may suit an electric tank but not a gas unit, and a hybrid heat pump needs more room again. We measure the space and check the nameplate before ordering, so the unit that arrives actually fits.
Can you install a water heater in a condo or townhouse?
Usually yes, if the building allows it. Condo corporations may require notice, approval or a particular shutoff arrangement, and a vent route through the building can limit gas options. Electric tanks are common because they need no flue. Check your declaration, then send us photos so we can plan the work.
What happens to my old water heater when you replace it?
Draining and removing the old unit is part of the job scope, and your quote confirms it. We drain it, disconnect the gas or electrical supply and water lines, and take it away. If your heater is rented, speak to the rental company first, as it may need to be returned.
Will a new gas water heater need a new vent or chimney liner?
Sometimes. A newer unit may have different venting needs than the one it replaces, and an older chimney can be oversized after a furnace change. We inspect the flue and recommend a liner, a power vent or other routing where the existing vent no longer suits. Gas work is regulated in Ontario.
What is the pressure relief valve and why does it have a pipe?
The temperature and pressure relief valve opens if the tank gets too hot or pressure climbs too high. Its discharge pipe carries hot water safely to a visible spot near the floor. It must never be capped or plugged. We check the valve and pipe routing as part of every installation.
Can a water heater go in an unheated garage?
Sometimes, but it is not ideal. Frost can damage pipes and controls, and codes set conditions for gas appliances in garages, such as height above the floor and protection from vehicles and ignition sources. Moving the unit indoors is often the better answer. We confirm what is allowed at your address.
What should I do before the installer arrives?
Clear a path to the heater, move stored items away from it and find the water shutoff. Photograph the label and the vent. Tell us about any tenants or neighbours affected by a short water shutoff. If you rent the heater, have your agreement ready. That helps us arrive prepared and keeps the visit short.
