Scope
UV lamp options and where they mount
- Coil-side lamps aimed at the evaporator coil and drain pan of an air handler or A-coil
- In-duct or air-stream lamps mounted in the plenum or return trunk
- Lamp length and power matched to cabinet size and the manufacturer instructions
- Access panel and interlock placement so lamps are not exposed during filter service
- Power taken from a suitable source, with electrical work by licensed electrical professionals or trade partners, with permits and ESA notification where required
- Placement checks around plastics and rubber parts that UV light can degrade
- Lamp replacement reminder set from the manufacturer stated lamp life
Process
How a UV duct light is installed
Every job starts with a conversation and a look at the equipment. You see the options in plain language before anything is booked.
- 1
Inspect the cabinet and coil
We look at your furnace or air handler, evaporator coil and plenum. This shows where a lamp can reach the surfaces you want treated, and where it cannot.
- 2
Choose the lamp type
Coil-side and in-duct lamps do different jobs. We explain the difference and choose a unit that fits the cabinet. Second Wind UV and Fresh-Aire UV are examples of what we supply; availability varies.
- 3
Mount, wire and seal
The lamp is mounted through a cut-out in the plenum or cabinet, which is sealed afterwards. Wiring goes to a suitable power source. Licensed electrical professionals or trade partners do the electrical work, with permits and ESA notification where required.
- 4
Test and explain
We confirm the lamp operates, that any interlock works and that no light escapes. We mark the replacement date and explain how lamp life works.

Good to know
What UV can and cannot do
What it can do
A properly selected UV system can help reduce microbial growth on treated surfaces and support cleaner HVAC airflow. It acts on surfaces and air that pass the lamp, for as long as the lamp is working and in the light path.
What it does not do
It does not filter dust or pollen, remove odours or gases or replace ventilation, and it does not clean every part of the ductwork. Results depend on the lamp, placement, airflow and coil condition. We make no medical or health claims.
Lamp replacement and safety
UV lamps lose output over time, even while they still glow. Replace them on the manufacturer schedule. Switch off power before opening the cabinet and never look at an exposed lamp. Use lamps the manufacturer lists for your unit, and avoid any lamp or device that produces ozone. Our air purifier service page covers replacements.
Pairing with filtration
UV works alongside filtration, not instead of it. Many homes pair a lamp with a deep media filter. See whole-home air purification.
Why our wording is careful
We do not claim UV eliminates germs or viruses. Product documentation, lamp type, placement and airflow decide what a given system can do, and we share that documentation on request.
Ontario notes
Ontario notes for UV duct lights
Humid summers keep coils wet
Cooling in Ontario summers pulls moisture out of the air and onto the evaporator coil, then down the drain pan. That wet surface is where a coil-side UV lamp is aimed. A clean coil and a pan that drains well still do the heavy lifting, and the lamp supports them.
Heat pumps and air conditioners
Many Ontario homes now use heat pump air handlers or central air with a furnace. A lamp must fit the cabinet and the coil layout, and it should sit where the coil is wet. We inspect the equipment before choosing the lamp type and position.
Ask for the documentation
Product documents state the lamp type, its stated life and any ozone information. We share them on request. Be careful with claims that a lamp eliminates germs or viruses, because results depend on lamp, placement, airflow and coil condition.
Lamp replacement fits the season
UV lamps lose output with hours of use even while they still glow. Many homeowners replace the lamp before the cooling season, along with the air conditioner service, so the lamp is fresh when the coil is wet. We record the install date and the stated lamp life.

Questions about UV Air Purifier
Does a UV light clean the air in my home?
It can help reduce microbial growth on treated surfaces and support cleaner HVAC airflow. It is not a filter and does not remove dust or odours. We explain what to expect for your system.
Where does the UV lamp go?
Usually near the evaporator coil in the air handler or A-coil cabinet, or in the plenum or duct airstream. The position depends on your equipment and the lamp type.
How often do UV lamps need replacing?
Lamp life is stated by the manufacturer for each model, and output declines with use. Intervals depend on the product, so we record the install date and the stated lamp life.
Is UV light safe inside ductwork?
Lamps are mounted inside the cabinet or duct so light is contained, and covers or interlocks help prevent exposure during service. Follow the manufacturer safety instructions and turn off power before opening access panels.
Which UV brands do you use?
Second Wind UV and Fresh-Aire UV are examples. This is a smaller product category, so we choose based on fit and availability and confirm the model before quoting.
Will a UV light remove odours or dust from my home?
No. UV lamps do not filter dust or pollen and do not remove odours or gases. They act on surfaces and air that pass the lamp. For particles you need filtration, and for odours the source usually needs attention. See whole-home air purification.
Does a UV light work with an air conditioner or heat pump?
Yes. Coil-side lamps are mounted to shine at the evaporator coil and drain pan of an air conditioner, heat pump air handler or furnace A-coil. The lamp must fit the cabinet and be mounted per the manufacturer instructions. We inspect the coil and cabinet before recommending a lamp.
Will a UV light make my air conditioner more efficient?
We do not promise that. A coil-side lamp is installed to help limit microbial growth on the coil surface and drain pan, not to improve efficiency. The coil still needs to be kept clean as part of regular cooling service. See air conditioner maintenance.
Can I install a UV light myself?
We do not recommend it. Installation involves cutting a hole in the plenum or cabinet, sealing it afterward, wiring to a power source and making sure no light escapes. UV light can harm eyes and skin. Qualified professionals do the electrical work where required.
Can UV light damage furnace or duct parts?
It can degrade some plastics and rubber over time when parts sit in the light path. We check placement around gaskets, wire insulation and plastic components and choose a mounting location that avoids direct exposure. The manufacturer instructions set the clearances.
Should a UV lamp run all year?
It depends on the model and wiring. Some lamps run continuously and others run with the blower. The manufacturer instructions decide, and lamp life is counted in hours of use. Many homes benefit most during the cooling season, when the coil is wet. We set it up according to the product.
How is a UV lamp different from an ionizer or an electronic air cleaner?
A UV lamp uses light on surfaces and air that pass it. An ionizer or electronic cell charges particles so they collect on plates or surfaces. These are different technologies with different cleaning, safety and ozone considerations. We tell you which category each product belongs to.
