What an electric or hybrid unit needs from the house
- Electrical review: panel capacity, breaker space and a dedicated circuit sized to the nameplate
- Hybrid units: space and airflow clearances set by the manufacturer for the install room
- Condensate drain routing to a floor drain, standpipe or condensate pump
- Room temperature review: a very cold space limits heat pump operation, and the unit cools its room
- Operating modes explained: heat pump, hybrid, electric resistance backup and vacation settings
- Noise check: placing the fan and compressor away from bedrooms and quiet living areas
- Water connections, relief valve piping, isolation valves and expansion control
- Start-up testing and a walkthrough of controls, filter access and drain checks
Process
Installing an electric or hybrid unit, in order
Every job starts with a conversation and a look at the equipment. You see the options in plain language before anything is booked.
- 1
Check the room, not just the tank
For a hybrid, we look at room volume, airflow around the unit, nearby walls and how close the space is to living areas. A cold, closed utility cupboard is a poor match. A larger open space such as a basement usually suits better.
- 2
Confirm the electrical supply
We review panel capacity and breaker space against the unit nameplate. New circuit or panel work is done by licensed electrical professionals or trade partners, with permits and ESA notification where required. See panels and circuits.
- 3
Plan the drain and water connections
A hybrid makes condensate while it runs, so it needs a drain path. We also set up supply lines, isolation valves and relief valve piping to code.
- 4
Commission and explain the modes
We test each operating mode, check for leaks and vibration, and show you the display, filter and drain. We also explain how to use electric backup mode when you need faster recovery.

Good to know
Living with a heat pump water heater
The cold basement effect
A hybrid pulls heat out of the surrounding air, which cools and dries the room. In summer that can be welcome. In a heated basement in winter it adds to the heating load, and in a very cold space the unit may lean more on its electric elements.
Noise
Expect fan and compressor sound, similar in character to a dehumidifier. Placement does more than anything else to decide how noticeable it is.
Maintenance
Keep the air filter clean and check the condensate drain. The tank itself needs the same attention as any other: relief valve, anode and sediment. See water heater maintenance.
Standard electric tanks
An electric tank has no flue or condensate, which makes it simpler to place. Recovery is generally slower than gas, so the right tank volume matters. Operating cost depends on your electricity plan.
Rebates are conditional
Eligible Ontario customers may qualify for rebates depending on the program rules, equipment, property and funding available at the time. A rebate that applies to one type of equipment does not automatically apply to a water heater. Check rebate eligibility before you buy, because programs change.

Your electricity plan matters
Ontario households may be on time-of-use or tiered electricity pricing, and when a unit runs affects what it costs. Hybrid and electric tanks have modes that change how often elements fire. Check your plan and ask about the unit's settings. Operating cost depends on your plan and usage.
Cold basements and the heating load
A hybrid unit takes heat from the air around it. In a heated Ontario basement during winter, that heat is pulled from your furnace output. In summer it also dehumidifies the room, which many homeowners welcome. The room's size and temperature decide how well the unit performs.
Older panels and electrical capacity
Houses from the 1950s to the 1990s may have limited panel capacity or no spare breaker space. A new circuit for an electric or hybrid unit must meet the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and may need a permit. Electrical work is done by licensed electrical professionals or trade partners, with permits and ESA notification where required.
Rebates are conditional and programs change
A program that supports heat pump space heating does not automatically cover water heaters, and program terms change. Confirm the current rules with the program before you buy. See rebate eligibility.

Questions before you book
Do heat pump water heaters work in an unheated basement?
They can, but performance falls as the room gets colder, and many units switch to electric heating elements when the air is too cool. We assess the room temperature range before recommending a hybrid.
How much space does a hybrid unit need?
It depends on the model. Manufacturers state minimum room volume, clearances and airflow, and we follow those. A tight closet often does not work without added ducting or ventilation.
Will it be noisy?
It makes some fan and compressor noise while the heat pump runs. Where it is placed matters. We discuss locations away from bedrooms before the install.
Do I need a special electrical circuit?
Most electric and hybrid units need a dedicated circuit sized to the nameplate. We check your panel capacity and breaker space first. Electrical work is done by licensed electrical professionals or trade partners, with permits and ESA notification where required.
Can I get a rebate?
Eligible Ontario customers may qualify for rebates, depending on program rules, equipment, property and funding available at the time. We cannot promise eligibility. See rebate eligibility and ask us about the specific model.
How does a heat pump water heater work?
Instead of making all its heat with an electric element, a hybrid unit uses a small heat pump to move heat from the surrounding air into the tank. Electric elements are still there as backup for heavy demand or cold rooms. Operating modes let you choose between efficiency and faster recovery.
Does a heat pump water heater need a drain?
Yes. A hybrid unit removes moisture from the air as it runs and produces condensate, which needs a path to a floor drain, standpipe or condensate pump. We plan the drain route during the site review, and we show you how to check it during the walkthrough.
What changes when I replace a gas water heater with a heat pump model?
The chimney or vent is no longer used, so it may need to be capped or addressed. You need a suitable electrical circuit, clearance and airflow for the unit, and a condensate drain. The gas supply to the old heater is capped by a qualified professional. See water heater installation.
Will a heat pump water heater make my basement colder?
It will cool and dry the air around it, which can be welcome in summer and adds to the heating load in winter. In a very cold space, the unit may rely more on its elements. Placement and room size decide how noticeable the effect is. We discuss locations with you.
Does a heat pump water heater work during a power outage?
No. Like a standard electric tank, it needs electricity to run its elements, fan and controls. Water already stored in the tank stays warm for a while, but heating stops until power returns. If outages worry you, tell us before you choose a type.
Is a heat pump water heater suitable for a condo?
It can be, if there is enough room volume, airflow and a drain, and if the building allows it. Small closets and rooms near bedrooms are poor fits because of airflow and fan noise. A standard electric tank is simpler to place. Check your declaration, then send photos and we will assess.
Can I use a heat pump water heater in a finished basement?
Often yes, if the room has enough volume and airflow, the unit is placed away from living space and a drain is available. Noise is similar to a dehumidifier. A leak sensor or drain pan is worth discussing. We look at the room before recommending a hybrid.
