The electrical work Kelvin Mechanical takes on

Our electrical work supports the way a modern home uses energy. It is deliberately controlled: defined projects in existing homes, usually tied to new equipment or an upgrade you have already planned.

Where the electrical scope stops

We do not take on broad new-construction electrical. Wiring a new build, a full addition or a gut renovation calls for a general electrical contractor and a different kind of project management.

If your project falls outside our scope, we say so on the first call and point you toward the kind of contractor you need. That is better than stretching into work someone else is set up to do well.

  • Wiring for new builds, additions and large renovations
  • Whole-building rewires and large electrical packages
  • Anything not tied to the equipment and upgrades listed above

Permits, ESA notification and who does the work

Electrical work is completed by licensed electrical professionals or trade partners. In Ontario, anyone hired to do electrical work in a home must be a Licensed Electrical Contractor, and a notification of work is filed with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) before the work starts. We confirm who is responsible for each step, including permits, when we quote the job.

Kelvin Mechanical works with licensed and qualified professionals and trade partners, depending on the project scope. Ask which permit applies to your project at the quote stage, so nothing is left to chance on the day.

Why panel capacity ties heat pumps, water heaters and EVs together

Your electrical panel and service have a fixed capacity. A heat pump, an electric or heat pump water heater, an EV charger and solar all change how that capacity is used, which is why a load calculation comes before the equipment is chosen.

Planning them in one conversation avoids paying for a charger circuit this year and a panel upgrade next year for a heat pump. Heat pump installation and electric and heat pump water heaters both start with an electrical check for the same reason.

  • Have a photo of your panel and its label ready if you can
  • Mention planned equipment such as a heat pump, charger or solar
  • Ask about permits and ESA notification where required for your job

Common questions

Do you do whole-house rewiring or new-build electrical?

No. Our electrical scope is controlled: EV chargers, panel upgrades, circuits for new equipment, lighting, switches, outlets and solar in existing homes. We tell you early if a project belongs with a general electrical contractor.

Do I need a permit for electrical work?

Often, depending on the work. Permits and ESA notification are handled where required, by licensed electrical professionals or trade partners. We confirm the details when we quote the job.

Can I add a heat pump and an EV charger without upgrading my panel?

Sometimes, but only a load calculation can tell you. Planning both together shows whether your panel has room, or whether a panel upgrade or load management is the sensible choice. See panel and circuit planning.

Do I need a licensed electrician to install an EV charger or upgrade a panel in Ontario?

If you are hiring someone, yes. In Ontario, anyone hired to do electrical work in a home must be a Licensed Electrical Contractor (an ECRA/ESA licence), so panel and charger installs are completed by licensed electrical professionals or trade partners, with permits and inspections where required. Kelvin Mechanical coordinates the scope, the schedule and the paperwork, and we confirm who is responsible for each step when we quote. Rules differ by municipality and change, so we confirm before work.

How do I know if my home needs an electrical upgrade before adding a heat pump?

Look at what the panel already feeds. A full panel, an older fuse panel, breakers that trip often or a small service are all reasons to ask for a load calculation first. A photo of the panel and its label helps us prepare, and a site review confirms whether a new circuit is enough. See panel and circuit planning and heat pump installation.

Can you wire a basement renovation in Toronto or Mississauga?

Not as a full wiring package. Our electrical scope covers defined projects in existing homes, such as circuits for new equipment, pot lights, switches, outlets, EV chargers and solar. A basement renovation with new rooms and walls calls for a general electrical contractor. If part of your plan fits our scope, such as a lighting upgrade, we say so on the first call.

Is electrical work different in older Ontario homes?

Often, yes. Houses from the 1950s to the 1990s can have fuse panels, smaller services, ungrounded outlets or older wiring types, and these affect what can be added safely. We look at the panel and the wiring we can see, then explain the options. Anything that needs a larger package of work is flagged early so you can plan it properly.

What should I send before an electrical site review?

A clear photo of the panel with its door open and the label visible, a photo of the meter area, and a short list of equipment you plan to add, such as a heat pump, EV charger or solar. Do not remove any covers. Build My Quote lets you send details and photos in one go, or call +1 905-407-7353.

Do you handle electrical work for landlords and property managers?

Yes, within the same controlled scope: equipment circuits, panel capacity checks, lighting and outlets, EV chargers and solar in existing properties. For rentals and condos, owner or board approval may be needed before work starts. Tell us the property type when you call +1 905-407-7353 or use Build My Quote, and we confirm what applies.
