What the Learning Centre covers

These articles answer the questions we hear most often at the front door and on the phone. Some are about safety, such as what a furnace is telling you before it fails. Some are about decisions, such as how a heat pump rebate works or what to ask before you sign with a contractor.

We write them the way we would explain things at your kitchen table: short sentences, specific detail and no hype. Where a topic depends on pricing, equipment or program rules, the article says so and points you to the right place to confirm.

  • Safety and early warning signs for gas heating equipment
  • Ontario rebate basics for heat pumps, in plain language
  • Checklists for comparing quotes and contractors
  • Troubleshooting guides for common furnace, air conditioner, heat pump and hot water problems
  • Seasonal notes on keeping heating, cooling and hot water equipment reliable

Choosing what to read first

If something about your furnace feels off, start with furnace warning signs. If you are thinking about a heat pump and wondering about the rebate, Ontario heat pump rebate basics is the place to begin. If you already have quotes in hand, choosing an HVAC contractor in Ontario gives you a checklist for comparing them.

For bigger purchases, the purchase guides go deeper on furnaces, heat pumps and water heaters.

If a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, get everyone out and call 911 from outside. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility's emergency line or 911 from outside. Do not stop to read an article first.

A note on accuracy and updates

Program rules, codes and equipment change. Each article is general information for Ontario homes, not advice for your specific property. Where specifics matter, such as rebate eligibility, we tell you to confirm current rules with the program or to book a site review.

If you spot something that looks out of date, email info@kelvinmechanical.ca and we will take a look.

Common questions

Are these articles written for homeowners or for professionals?

For homeowners and property managers. We keep the language plain and explain technical terms the first time they appear.

Can I rely on an article instead of a service visit?

No. Articles help you ask better questions, but they cannot diagnose or size equipment for your home. A site review or service visit is what settles those points.

Do the articles include pricing?

We avoid dollar figures because pricing varies with equipment, venting, ductwork, installation complexity and warranty options. A quote follows a site review. The exception is rebate language, which is conditional and Ontario-only.

How often is the Learning Centre updated?

We add and revise articles as programs, equipment and seasonal questions change. If a topic is missing, send us a note and we will consider it.

What should I do first if my furnace stops working in the winter?

Check the thermostat, the furnace power switch and the filter, and make sure outdoor vent pipes are clear of snow. Do not remove panels, and do not relight a pilot more than once, only as the label directs. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone out and call 911 from outside. For other faults, read furnace warning signs and call +1 905-407-7353; emergency service is subject to availability.

Where can I read about Ontario heat pump rebates?

Start with Ontario heat pump rebate basics for a plain-language overview, then the rebates page for how the program and our eligibility check fit together. Rebate rules, funding and qualifying equipment change, so confirm current details with the program before you sign anything.

How often should I service my furnace and air conditioner in Ontario?

Most manufacturers expect regular service, and many homeowners book heating equipment in the fall and cooling equipment in the spring. Check your own warranty documents for requirements. A visit catches worn parts and airflow problems before a cold snap or heat wave. See furnace maintenance and AC maintenance. Fees are confirmed at booking.

What is the difference between the Learning Centre and the purchase guides?

Articles are short and focused on one question, such as warning signs or rebate basics. The purchase guides are longer and cover a full decision, such as replacing a furnace, choosing a heat pump or selecting a water heater. Read an article for a quick answer, and a guide when you are comparing quotes.

Which article should I read before signing a quote?

Read choosing an HVAC contractor in Ontario. It covers written scope, sizing, permits, warranties, rebates and exclusions, and it works for any company. If the quote is for a major equipment purchase, add the matching purchase guide from the guides hub and ask for a site review.

Are the articles useful for rental properties and light commercial buildings?

Mostly for homes and small rental properties. Safety, warranty and quote-checking advice carries over, but a light commercial building has its own equipment and rules. For rooftop or packaged units, see commercial mechanical. For multi-unit rentals, see property management HVAC.
