HVAC in London: what to expect
London, the Forest City, is the largest city in southwestern Ontario and has a distinct housing mix. Old North, Wortley Village and Old East Village have early 1900s homes, many in the pale buff brick common in older London neighbourhoods, with plaster walls, narrow chases and ducts added after the fact. Masonville, Westmount and Byron are largely mid-century to 1990s subdivision housing, and Lambeth, Hyde Park and the north and west edges have newer builds.
London sits inland and gets lake-effect snow, so winters are colder and snowier than along the Lake Ontario shore, and summers are hot and humid. That raises two practical points: heating capacity at cold design temperatures needs a careful load calculation, and outdoor units need clearance above the snow. Western University, Fanshawe College and the hospitals also drive a large rental and multi-unit market, which suits scheduled maintenance. London is farther from the GTA than most of our service area, so sending photos and equipment details with your request helps us plan the first visit.

What London homes usually need
Old North, Wortley Village and Old East Village: century homes
Plaster walls, narrow chases and limited basement height make ductwork a puzzle. Options include careful duct changes, ductless systems or a mix of both. The right answer depends on the house, so we look at the attic, basement and accessible runs during a site review before a furnace installation is planned.
Snow-belt winters and cold-climate heat pump planning
Cold-climate heat pumps are built for low temperatures, but capacity falls as it gets colder, depending on the model. A load calculation at the design temperature shows whether the heat pump can carry the house or needs furnace backup. Eligible Ontario customers may qualify for up to $7,500 depending on the program rules, equipment, property and funding available at the time; see heat pump installation.
Student rentals and multi-unit houses
Landlords near Western and Fanshawe often manage several properties with equipment of different ages. Scheduled visits, clear notes and photos of each unit make the work easier to plan. See property management HVAC.

Questions from London customers
London is outside the GTA. How is a visit planned?
We ask for photos, the equipment make and model if you have it and a description of the problem when you book. That lets us plan the first visit instead of guessing. Larger jobs start with a site review, and a quote follows it.
Do outdoor heat pump or AC units need anything special for snow?
Yes. Outdoor units should sit above expected snow depth on a stand or wall bracket, with clearance for airflow and defrost drainage. Drifting snow, roof run-off and ice from eaves are the usual hazards, so the location is chosen with them in mind.
Can century-home ducts be improved without opening up walls?
Sometimes. A technician checks accessible runs in the basement and attic, the return-air paths and the blower. Where walls cannot be opened, ductless or smaller-profile solutions may suit better, and each home is different.
